Frequently Asked Questions
Following are some of the questions that tend to be asked every
once in a while, along with the answers. If you can't find an answer to
your question here, please check the
contact page for pointers to more resources.
- Help! I've forgotten/lost/misplaced my master password
- Sorry, there's not much we can do to help. Any "recovery" mechanism that we would implement would be open to abuse. Note, however, that there's no limit in the number of attempts you can make with an incorrect password.
- Help! I can't open my password database
- First, eliminate the obvious: Make sure Caps Lock is off, and if your PC is multilingual, make sure that you're in the
right language.
If this doesn't help, try opening one of the backup files that are automatically created. They're named with a .ibak
suffix, and by default reside in the same directory as the main database.
If this fails, you'll have to revert to an offline backup copy
(you did create one and regularly update it, right?).

- The current version of Password Safe is supported under Windows 10 and Windows 11. If you're using an older version of Windows, you can
run an older version of Password Safe. All previous versions of Password Safe may be found here.
- Security: What algorithm and keysize does Password Safe use?
- Password Safe uses the Twofish algorithm with a
256 bit key.
- Security: How secure is Password Safe?
- The V3 format was academically reviewed and found to be secure ("On the Security of Password Manager Database Formats").
The implementation's source code is freely and openly available for inspection, and has passed several security reviews.
- Portability: Does Password Safe run on X?
- Probably. Check here for a list of compatible implementations that run on various platforms.
- Is Password Safe available in my language?
- See here for a list of currently supported languages, and how to add yours.
- I can't upgrade / uninstall Password Safe - what gives?
- You first need to fully exit the program, either via right-click on the system tray icon and selecting Exit, or from the main window, select File->Exit.
Once the program's exited, you should be able to upgrade or uninstall with no problems.
- My anti-virus program doesn't like Password Safe! Is Password Safe infected?
- Most likely this is a false positive. You can check yourself by uploading the program to VirusTotal. It usually takes a few days for the anti-virus vendors
to add a new version of Password Safe to their whitelist.
