PasswordSafe was originally designed by Bruce Schneier and released as a free utility application. Since then,
it has evolved considerably. The following table has links to pages detailing the release history of PasswordSafe
since the project was made open source. This can be useful for seeing
what features were added and what bugs were fixed since a given release.

18 February 2004
Release 2.0 is finally out! To recap, the major new features are:
- Tree view allowing items to be grouped logically
- URLs in the Notes filed that start with http: or https: are
entered in the popup (right-click) menu of the entry. Selecting the URL
will invoke the browser with the corresponding page
- Support for export to CSV (text) format - Used of this is strongly discouraged, as it is a huge potential security risk
- Updated Help file
- New graphics (thanks to Emilijan Mirceski)
Now that this release is done, I'll be able to implement some of the more interesting feature requests.
Oh - I almost forget: This release is currently available for desktop versions of Windows only, no PocketPC version (yet).
Maxim Tikhonov
has written a short description of Password Safe in Russian, as well as a Russian version of the 2.0 Help file. Thanks to Maxim for his work. If anyone is interested in doing such work in other languages, please let me know.
11 January 2004
Nolan Eakins has written a
Linux version of PasswordSafe! This application, called MyPasswordSafe, is compatible with
pre-2.0 database files created by the Windows version. MyPasswordSafe is built upon Qt 3, and is based on the 1.92 PasswordSafe code base. The first release
is available here (source) and here (binary). Nolan has put up a page describing MyPasswordSafe at http://www.semanticgap.com/myps/.
Note that I have not reviewed MyPasswordSafe's code in depth, nor have
I tried to run the program. Specifically, I've no idea if
MyPasswordSafe is as (in)secure as PasswordSafe is or not. Note also that this is a first release, and that Nolan is actively developing the program. For the time
being, we have decided not to merge Nolan's code into the PasswordSafe
codebase on SourceForge. I'd like to thank Nolan for his effort, and
for making his work available in both source and binary form. This is
OpenSource development at its best!
3 January 2004
PasswordSafe 2.0-pre2 has been released. This fixes most of the
issues raised by user of the last release, as well as implementing the
"export to plaintext" feature. Here are the Release Notes, and here's a link to the download. Note that this is still a BETA release. I expect that there will be one or two additional iterations until a non-beta release will be ready.
